The Architecture MasterPrize (AMP) has awarded the 2019 Winner in the Institutional Architecture category to IMO and Cheng Jun-Qiang Architects & Associates for the “Xiafu Activity Center.” Celebrating the best in architecture, interior, and landscape design, the AMP aims to advance the appreciation of architecture worldwide while showcasing world-class talent and visionary designers. The design concept of the “Xiafu Activity Center” was reviewed by the AMP’s esteemed panel of jurors, which included notable figures such as J.J. Pan (Founder of J.J. Pan and Partners), Graham Morrison (Partner at Allies and Morrison), and Spela Videcnik (Harvard GSD / Ofis Architects).

Completed in 2017 and located in the Linkou District of New Taipei City, the Xiafu Activity Center provides a vibrant venue for cultural gatherings and activities for the local community. IMO’s design challenges the traditional perception of civic community centers by translating the architectural vernacular of the neighboring Hongfu Temple into a striking array of colorful columns and sharp rooflines—a design that quickly became a social media phenomenon. The combination of these elements attracts cross-generational crowds, creating an essential intersection between Taiwan’s rich traditional culture and the next younger generation as more people travel from afar to visit this landmark.
